Insurance Video
A Home Security Training Project

About
Due to changes in new revenue channels in the company, there was a need for customer excellence employees to begin selling and managing Home and Auto insurance at Vivint. As an instructional designer, I was tasked with producing a video that would be embedded in an Elearning course and would assist in the initiative. This is important to create a standardized level of proficiency in selling and managing insurance.
Insurance Video

Design Philosophy
Simple and Fun
The content of the video must be accessible to all levels of employees, With a low bar of entry and low cognitive load, the video should allow learners to follow simple, yet motivating content that is familiar and fun
Contextual Learning
To avoid boredom by overbearing Instructional conext, unrelated to their tasks or job, learners will only be presented with streamlined instructions pertinent to their tasks.
Quick to Grasp
Well constructed topics discussed in this video will provide students with scoffolding for the learning transfer of content in an efficinet manner. This includes well scripted and animated vidual stimulus for full comprehension of the material.

Apple Motion
The software used for this project was Apple Motion, a common visual and motion graphics application. Similar to Adobe After Affects, the chosen industry standard for motion graphics, Apple Motion can still punch above its weight and output remarkable high fidelity graphics, especially for text animation. For this project, I chose Apple Motion due for it’s ability to animate text and graphics with a high level of efficiency; and to me, speedy deliveries are essential these smaller projects.

Design
With the established principles in mind, (Simple and Fun, Contextual Learning, and Quick to Grasp) I set out to design a short video that answers the following learning objectives.
-
Describe in detail what is home and auto insurance
-
Walk customers step-by-step through the insurance claim process
-
Inform customers of the benefits of having insurance

Employees will be able to:

Development
Tasked with completing this project with a short deadline, I took it upon myself to script the dialogue, storyboard the video, generate all assets, and edit it within 3 days. The first draft was completed by the second day and was approved by the third. The Voiceover on the video was not performed by me but by a colleague at Vivint who is also a professional Voice over artist.

Thoughts
This project taught me a few new things about working alone on a tight deadline. One of those is that it’s okay to ask for help on a project occasionally because we all have our limits and energy is an expensive resource that we have to carefully manage. That being said, my ability to plan out and organize my workflow appropriately is something that helped immensely on this project and gives me more confidence moving forward.

Overall, the video turned out well, and more importantly, after being implemented in employee training and put into practice, it’s made a positive impact on the customer excellence teams.
